What Is Delta-8? What you Need to Know

It seems that no matter where you look from magazines to blogs, and even health journals, people are talking about Delta-8. For the past year, there has been a constant stream of studies and product releases featuring Delta-8, and much is being made of its future in the THC and CBD communities. Go ahead and do a Google search of Delta-8, and you will see a plethora of new products, from CBD oils to mints and classic flower offerings. But why is this? Why did Delta-8 seemingly come out of nowhere, and why is it making such a big splash across the country?

We are going to spend some time in this article, breaking down precisely what Delta-8 is, why it is becoming so popular, and why it may be something you should consider trying out in the near future.

What is Delta-8 THC?

So what is Delta 8 THC? Delta-8-Tetrahydrocannabinol, also known as delta-8 THC, Δ8THC, or simply Delta-8 is a cannabinoid derived from the cannabis plant and contains many of the same nausea fighting, anxiety-reducing, appetite-stimulating, and psychoactive effects that have made other THC and CBD based products so very popular for medical and recreational usage.

Delta 8 vs Delta 9

At the chemical level, Delta-8 is very comparable to Delta-9, which has long been the superstar of THC-based products (to the point that Delta-9 is typically used interchangeably with the term THC). While incredibly similar, there are few minor differences between the two compounds. The “Delta” in the names refers to the location of the compound’s atomic bond; Delta8 has a bond on the 8th carbon chain, while Delta-9 has it on the 9th carbon chain; thus, they interact slightly differently with our cannabinoid receptors.

Perhaps the most significant difference, and the reason why Delta-8 hasn’t seen greater popularity in years past, is the levels in which it naturally occurs in the cannabis plant. Delta-8 is much rarer and harder to come by, with less than 1% of the dried flower containing Delta-8, compared to Delta 9, which can make up to 30-50% of the cannabis flower. This rarity has made producing products and conducting studies into the Delta 8 compound a much more challenging process. However, scientific advancement in recent years has allowed us to begin to extract Delta 8 in more significant quantities and to produce it at much greater rates.

More and more research has been coming out in the Delta 8 vs Delta 9 realm. What cannabis experts and biologists have been finding has been very promising. Delta-8 THC delivers the same psychotropic effects you expect from traditional THC, but with a more mellow and less intense high. At the same time, Delta-8 has been shown in several studies to offer many of the same appetite-stimulating, anti-nausea, and anti-anxiety effects that have made medical cannabis such a popular item.

While research is still ongoing, and the surge of Delta 8 offerings is still in its infancy, these early findings lead many experts to believe that the future of this cannabinoid is incredibly bright. We are only at the beginning of discovering what Delta 8 THC is capable of.

Addressing Common Questions About Delta-8

Perhaps the best way to give you a clear picture of Delta-8-Tetrahydrocannabinol is to directly address some of the most common questions we get on this cannabis compound.

Is Delta-8 Legal in the United States?

Delta-8 THC, much like other cannabinoids, falls under The Agricultural Improvement Act of 2018 or 2018 Farm Bill (7 USC § 1639o(1) and is defined under “hemp,” meaning that they are no longer considered to be a controlled substance on the federal level. While there are still a large number of federal and state regulations to contend with, Delta 8 is typically going to fall under the same umbrella as other THC products in your region or state. Currently, only Colorado, Arkansas, Arizona, Rhode Island, Montana, Mississippi, Utah, Iowa, Idaho, Delaware, and Alaska have specific restrictions on Delta-8 THC products.

As an interesting side-note, it seems that the government had planned for the eventuality of Delta-8 legalization for a while. In fact, there is a Delta-8-Tetrahydrocannabinol patent by HHS regarding converting CBD to Δ8THC.

While Delta8 is legal in most states, you will need to check with your local laws and regulations to be certain.

Will Delta-8 THC Get you High?

We are often asked, “Does Delta 8 THC get you high?” or “Does Delta 8 make you high” and the answer is pretty simple. As we went over previously, Delta-8 THC has been reported to provide the same psychotropic effects as Delta 9 THC, though in slightly varying degrees.

Delta 8 is said by many to be more of a body high and provides a more profound sense of relaxation without the anxiety that is often ascribed to classic Delta-9 THC. For this reason, nicknames like ‘weed light’ have sprung up around Delta-8.

So does Delta 8 THC get you high? Yes, but not necessarily in the same ways, you may be used to. Slightly different cannabinoid receptors are interacted with, and the way in which delta 8 makes you high is altered somewhat for that reason. Many prefer the Delta 8 high, though that is, of course, up to personal preference in the end. If you have used THC products in the past and had a great deal of anxiety, it is worth trying Delta 8 to see if you have a better reaction.

What do we Know About Delta-8 Cancer Treatments?

Another big area of interest is the possibility of using Delta 8 to help alleviate the symptoms suffered by cancer patients. Several studies are still ongoing to see if Delta-8 cancer treatments are a viable possibility, though It is safe to assume that since Delta-8 has many of the same interactions with our cannabinoid system, it would be able to provide much the same relief as other THC products. In fact, since Delta 8 seems to focus more on the body, there is a chance it can have even better results for patients without causing as much of a ‘head high,’ something many would prefer.

To add some weight to these assumptions, a  2018 study was able to show that Δ8THC could reduce inflammation, as well as decrease pain in mice. A solid first step to more extensive clinical trials. Another preliminary test also reinforced these showing a decrease in pain felt by rats. Other studies have shown promise in the realms of appetite stimulation as well as seizure reduction.  Of course, Delta 8 has been long overlooked by the scientific community for many years, and we are just now starting to take an honest look at its possibilities. What we have found so far, however, has been very promising.
