Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a very common condition affecting millions of people around the world. While the symptoms are varied, the need for relief from the worst of the issues is universal. By all accounts living with OCD is a challenge and one that often adversely affects one’s quality of life.
However, there may be some good news on the horizon. Scientists in the last few years have begun to increasingly focus on Cannabidiol (CBD) and the many health benefits it may have. What they have begun to find is that many of the possible medical benefits that are seemingly derived from CBD may be able to provide substantial relief for the symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder. In this article, we will take a brief look at the science so far on this topic and see just why CBD may be a key ingredient in future OCD medications.
Some Facts About Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
Obsessive-compulsive disorder, also known as OCD, is defined by one who has thoughts, worries, or fears that are considered unreasonable and that lead to behaviors that are defined as compulsive. That performs an action repetitively and regularly with little purpose. Symptoms will usually start slowly and can change in frequency throughout one’s life. The only known treatments currently involved talk therapy, some forms of medication, or a combination of both.
Scientists have found in recent years that OCD is more common than was previously thought. According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), roughly 1.2% of US adults have had an OCD diagnosis, and around 80% of those cases are severe.
The Science Behind Treating OCD with CBD Products
So is there science behind treating OCD with CBD products? While much of what we know about CBD and how it interacts with your body, especially as it pertains to issues like OCD, is in its infancy there has been a decent number of studies that have come out over the years.
In 2015, a piece was published in Neurotherapeutics that looked at Cannabidiol as a possible treatment for Anxiety Disorders like OCD and PTSD. They looked at the research to that date in PubMed, PsycINFO, Web of Science Scopus, and the Cochrane Library databases. They concluded that the “current evidence indicates CBD has considerable potential as a treatment for multiple anxiety disorders, with a need for further study of chronic and therapeutic effects in relevant clinical populations.”
A meta-analysis of the research into CBD and OCD was done back in 2019 and found that the endocannabinoid system, of which CBD directly interacts with, plays a vital role in regulating our anxiety, fear, and repetitive behaviors. The analysis also mentioned that there is a large amount of anecdotal evidence coming from those using CBD who have experienced a reduction in symptoms and an overall increase in quality of life. The third aspect of the analysis were several case reports (a detailed report of the symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of an individual patient by a doctor) where patients had improved symptoms following treatment with Cannabis compounds. The conclusion was that items that target the endocannabinoid (such as CBD) system are an area that should be looked into, and maybe a great way to create novel medicines for OCD.
Scientific evidence so far seems to point to a strong correlation between CBD usage and a reduction in OCD symptoms.
A more recent study published in the Journal of Affective Disorders earlier in 2021, scientists used the App Strainprint® to help track eighty-seven people with OCD symptoms. These subjects were given cannabis products over a period of 31 months, and the results were very positive. In the study, it was found that CBD helps decrease various symptoms of OCD by significant amounts. There was a measured 60% reduction in compulsions, a nearly 50% reduction in intrusive thoughts, and a 52% reduction in anxiety after inhaling cannabis products. In the findings, they stated, “Higher concentrations of CBD and higher doses predicted larger reductions in compulsions.” The biggest concern was the possibility of developing a tolerance to the CBD items over time. While there was no placebo control group for this experiment, the dramatic results are a clear sign that more research into CBD and OCD should be done in the coming months and years.
While as of yet there have been no studies that give solid guidelines on dosage, thus far, the evidence seems to indicate that higher levels of CBD correlate to more effective results and that Full-Spectrum or Broad Spectrum CBD products may be preferable. Roughly speaking, more CBD will help with OCD to a greater extent.
The Entourage Effect
We should briefly touch on the entourage effect and why it is important for understanding CBD and OCD. The entourage effect refers to the theory that the interactions that CBD, and other terpenes found in Cannabis, have with your endocannabinoid system are heavily reliant on one another.
In study after study, it was found that CBD with higher amounts of other naturally occurring compounds taken from the cannabis plant (broad-spectrum and full-spectrum CBD) would have a much more pronounced effect on the body. The idea is that these compounds, CBD, and others, work together to enter and affect the endocannabinoid system. This is likely how CBD will help with OCD in future medications.
Since scientists believe the endocannabinoid system is tied to OCD symptoms and that being able to better interact with this system could be vital in finding an effective treatment. For this reason, full-spectrum and broad-spectrum CBD oils will be more likely to affect positive change when it comes to issues surrounding OCD.
